| Internal
security system
The baby's internal security
system immediately starts to learn from every aspect of the negative
experience. Each one of his five senses starts feeding information
back into his mind, and at the time of the shock his internal
security system took a Five-Sense-Snapshot of every element around
him, the sounds, the images, the feelings the taste in his mouth
and the smell of the room. He stores this sensory-snapshot in
his body's active library of potential dangers. This natural process
is an essential part of survival, ensuring that if the child is
in a similar situation in the future, he is warned by his internal
security system to be very careful. As he grows older, the list
will grow with other dangers such as getting his fingers caught
in car doors, falling off a bicycle, naked flames and being near
the edge of a very high cliff. If there is any near match with
one of his stored sensory-snapshots, then his internal alarm system
goes into a full alert mode and warns him in unpleasant terms.
It uses the five sense network to express deliver the message
of anxiety.
Seven years later and here comes the phobia…
The boy now eight, unfortunatly
finds himself on a visit with a great grandparent who is terminally
ill in the hospital. His great grandmother has some violets in
the room giving off a gentle fragrance. All of a sudden, a full
blown anxiety sets in and the boy feels a mass of uncomfortable
sensations in his body: his breathing changes, his arms and legs
tingle, his mind starts throwing up dark thoughts of going crazy
and death, he feels dizzy and nauseated. He is experiencing a
red alert from his internal alarm system, a maximum fight or flight
response and although he doesn’t know why, he wants to get
out of the room and out of the hospital immediately.
Escape
is avoidance
When he can get away and escape
the hospital, he feels relieved and calm. He thinks about his
experience, trying to find a reasonable explanation. Finding no
rational explanation, he thinks it may be something to do with
the hospital, he promises to himself that he will never risk going
into a hospital room ever again.
This powerful and uncomfortable experience could be directly connected
to wasp sting, but the boy may never know this. Even though the
boy does not remember the episode, the fragrance of the flowers
still has a potent link straight back to the bad experience of
the wasp sting. The potential danger list in his sensory-snapshot
library contains the scent of the violets in his bedroom from
years earlier.
The smell lingers
The fragrance of violets has
managed to create an intense, unexplained anxiety within him.
The boy might continue to avoid all hospitals as a means of avoiding
the perceived anxiety. A phobia requires this same type of avoidance
to keep it alive. As the boy goes through his life, any mention
of hospitals might cause a mild wave of anxiety in his body as
he remembers that time in his grandmothers room, giving him a
reason to avoid a full blown anxious feeling. Quite logically,
he avoids what he thinks is causing that anxiety, the hospital.
Hypnotherpy for phobias
Eliminating a phobia with Hypnotherapy
is fast and effective. The process does not require a lengthy
investigation into the past in order to track down the source
of the phobia. With Hypnotherapy, it doesn't matter where the
phobia started. Hypnotherapy changes the inappropriate reaction
to the object or situation by changing the response. It shifts
the behaviour from inescapable horror to calm and gentle thoughts
of relaxation.
For example, a little girl who has a learnt fear of cats from
her Mother might stay with a friend who has a cute kitten over
her summer holidays. Initially, the girl would be afraid of the
cat. But after spending a few days with the kitten, seeing her
friend playing with the cute kitten, she slowly desensitises herself
to the threat of the kitten and the anxiety it causes. After a
while the link between cats and her fear is severed.
In Hypnotherapy, a person's
enhanced imagination is used to safely and gently recreate the
phobic scenes that trigger anxiety.
A person with a fear of cats could be asked to imagine being near
a cat, very vaguely at first, then gradually increasing in clarity
and intensity at a pace with which they felt comfortable. This
exercise provides a means of desensitising the person with calm
relaxed thoughts, with easy breathing and relaxation. Anxieties
and ultimately the fight or flight response is stripped of its
entire link to cats. Using Hypnotherapy, this person will be able
to cope with cats in an appropriate way in the future.
